The challenge

The field of robotics is facing a new era: Robots are evolving from rigidly programmed machines into intelligent, adaptive systems that operate autonomously in unstructured environments, understand natural language and perform tasks in domestic or industrial settings. However, there lies untapped innovation potential beyond these established application domains that can be unlocked by adding new components such as artificial intelligence (AI), sensor technologies or novel actuators to established robotic systems.

Methodology

Under the motto “Purpose. Progress. Robots,” we—the Applied Robotics Alliance (ARA) at Fraunhofer IAO—provide an innovation network for robot manufacturers, integrators, component and system suppliers and companies from various industries interesting in deploying robots. The goal is to collaborate not only to make robots smarter but also to develop entirely new applications to address innovative use cases. We moderate and manage the network based on scientific and technical expertise.

Participating in the Applied Robotics Alliance provides the following opportunities:

  • identifying radically new application areas and business models for robotics solutions,
  • developing user-centered, innovative, economically viable robotic applications by integrating new technical components and AI,
  • developing individual strategic R&D roadmaps to strengthen international competitiveness,
  • expanding R&D partnerships and improving visibility.

Results

Participating companies receive the following results:

  • an overview of current research findings, global trends and future potential applications for robots in different application areas
  • access to new application areas, product innovations and business models
  • prototypical implementation of product improvements and opportunities to test them with potential end users
  • individual R&D roadmaps for strategic product and service innovations incl. matching with perfectly suited R&D partners for future collaborations
  • high-profile marketing and visibility on digital platforms and in the Future Robotics showroom

Procedure and organization

Project duration: July 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027

In addition to partner meetings with all participating companies, individual partner interests will be identified in confidential onboarding meetings and incorporated in individual R&D roadmaps. An innovation sprint will be conducted for each of six applications, combining various formats: keynote presentations, application workshops, partner matching and prototyping. These activities facilitate knowledge transfer, foster collaboration and promote creative ideas within the partner network. In the Future Robotics showroom, partner solutions can be presented, further developed and promoted through events.
