For decades people have worked with the microencapsulation technology. Within this time, this technology has diffused into new and different technology fields, was combined with other technologies and has proved to create new and diverse applications. Furthermore this technology has high potential to incubate in new industry branches to enable innovative solutions to be integrated profitable in new or existing products.
In order to see those chances and possibilities in time and to fasten the time-to-market interrelation it is essential to systematically collect and evaluate the right information. This allows participating companies to directly use this information.
This was the starting argument for the Fraunhofer IAO, Stuttgart, and Fraunhofer IAP, Potsdam-Golm, to launch the community “Technology Platform Microencapsulation” (TPM) in 2009.
Participating companies were supported by the identification of concrete applications with focus on each company’s interests and were continuously informed about technology developments in all aspects of the encapsulation technology.
A definitive positive feedback of the participants on the value of the TPM in 2009 encouraged the researchers of the technology platform microencapsulation to continue for another two years.
In February 18th, 2011 several companies, thereunder BASF, Beiersdorf, Clariant, Follmann, Giesecke, Givaudan, Henkel, INEOS Melamines, M-real Zanders, Novozymes, Papierfabrik August Koehler AG, Rema TIP TOP and Syngenta, will arrive at the Fraunhofer IAP in Potsdam Golm for the Kick-Off Meeting 2011 of the 2nd phase of the “technology platform microencapsulation”. The improved concept of 2009 and 2010 has convinced the members of the technology platform to participate further. The concept comprehends on the one hand a quarterly newsletter in which relevant information about technology developments concerning production methods and working materials are prepared and on the other hand an overview about recently published patents and articles are listed, evaluated and edited. All edited information is included in a yearly study on the technology potential which focuses on newest developments, there challenges and risks, market constrains and trends for technical developments and new application fields. An online-platform hosted by the Fraunhofer IAO provides possibilities to interact easily besides the fact that all publications for the community are available online.
In addition to the TPM a yearly organized Forum on microencapsulation gives the participants and further interested companies, universities and researchers the chance to network, find business partners or just to exchange ideas. After the success of the Forum 2008, 2009 and 2010, Fraunhofer IAO and Fraunhofer IAP will enlarge the Forum to a conference with a strategic partner Gate2Tech.
