Research on Innovative ICT Solutions

The business unit Information and Communication Technology conducts numerous collaborative research projects together with national and international partners. The overarching goal of these research activities is the design and evaluation of useful and usable IT architectures and applications to answer societal and business needs.

The topics addressed in those projects include scenario-based and user-centric design methods, collaborative information management concepts, IT integration paradigms, business concepts for IT services and viable security solutions.

Our current research projects and initiatives are described below.

Sustainable IT architectures (Cloud, SaaS and Co.)
Daily life is vastly influenced and in many areas even dominated by IT applications, no matter if we look at industry, business, public services, research or private life.

Information Management for Civil Security
Any society is regularly confronted with challenging situations that require timely and agile, yet dependable and appropriate, coordinated reactions by stakeholders organized in various different institutions.

Viable IT Security Infrastructures
Technological solutions that address issues like security, privacy and reliability have been developed by companies and in research projects.

Software Development for Multicore and Manycore Architectures
Software developers have long profited from the advances in processor technology. With new processors generally being faster and more complex existing programs were executed faster without being modified.

The internet of services
Fraunhofer IAO is developing new methods and technologies within the TEXO project together with SAP Research, Siemens and further research partners in order to offer and use simple software solutions as a future service over the internet.

IT solutions for service networks
Catering systems in the airline sector serve as an example for the integrated service supply chains being designed and set up within the iC-RFID group project.

Service-based technologies for claim settlements
On behalf of many insurance companies, the Frauhofer IAO has developed reference models for IT supported claim settlements. A wide range of Fraunhofer technologies are employed in such assignments.

Ambient assisted living
Smart services and assistance programs for the elderly should not only be easy to use, they should also be available at reasonable prices.

Robot teams in clinic operations
Numerous small, mobile robots will perhaps soon actively support the nurses and caretakers in hospitals.
