Mobility and Urban Systems Engineering

The coming decades will be ones of profound change for our cities: not only do they have to deal with spiraling populations, there are the challenges posed by climate change, demographic shifts, rising living standards and a scarcity of natural resources to confront too. That is why the city is the key testing ground for innovative technologies and intelligent ideas for sustainable development – and why cities represent one of the largest future markets overall.

As a key component of tomorrow’s sustainable, life-enhancing cities, mobility too will undergo a fundamental overhaul. Workable mobility concepts for the cities of the future will arise once we go beyond conventional technologies and services.

The Mobility and Urban Systems Engineering (MUSE) business unit brings together around 40 employees, including engineers, urban planners, computer scientists, economists and sociologists. This interdisciplinary team works together to develop dynamic system solutions geared toward mobility and the cities of the future.

Our work focuses on the following topics:

  • Electric vehicle systems: urban and inter-urban charging infrastructure; shared use of electric vehicles; logistics concepts for electric vehicles; integrated fleet and charging management
  • Urban mobility: intermodal trip chaining; ease of mobility; mobility concepts for urban spacest
  • The city: Morgenstadt – the city of the future; resilient cities; concepts for the districts of the future
  • Energy: micro smart grids incorporating electric vehicles; charging containers featuring rapid charge spots, buffer storage and photovoltaic facilities
  • Sharing systems: technological and organizational solutions that allow goods to be shared; sharing depots; development of products with sharing in mind

We design mobility and urban systems for industry and the public sector. As scientists working in applied research, we are always keen to work alongside industry and cities to develop our solutions to full maturity and to test them in practice.


The Mobility and Urban Systems Engineering business unit is organized in the following teams:

Mobility Innovation
The Competence Center Mobility Innovation works on the key topics, concepts and technologies that will drive the mobility solutions of the future.

Mobility Concepts and Infrastructure
The Mobility Concepts and Infrastructure Competence Team conducts research into the development, implementation and industrialization of sustainable mobility concepts, both on the regional and international markets.

Urban Systems Engineering
The Urban Systems Engineering competence team conducts research into tools, methods and processes for use in urban planning and the implementation and transformation of urban systems.

Shared Systems' Design
More and more, people are sharing products. In terms of using resources efficiently and effectively, this is a significant boon – as long as the systems in place to support it are set up in the right way. The bulk of sharing opportunities available today, however, are improvised and aimed at a very specific audience.

Urban Governance Innovation
Das The Competence Team Urban Governance Innovation works on issues relating to the management of innovative urban development processes.
